At Hillsboro Village Dental, our team uses the latest in dental technology to provide quality dental care for the whole family. If you’ve visited our office recently, you’ve probably either noticed our dental X-ray machine or even had dental X-rays taken. Today, we want to shed some light on why we use dental X-rays and why we’re confident that they’re a safe and effective way to help us make sure your teeth are healthy and strong.
Why Use Dental X-Rays?
In conjunction with his visual examination, Dr. Hill uses dental X-rays to diagnose and treat potential problems before they become major issues. For example, dental X-rays allow us to monitor developing teeth that haven’t erupted yet, check the health of the bone around your tooth, locate cavities, and much more.
What Types of X-Rays Do We Use?
Typically, we use three different types of dental X-rays to gather a comprehensive picture of your oral health:
- Bite-wing X-rays allow us to check for decay between back teeth by showing your molars and bicuspids
- Periapical X-rays focus on one or two teeth and provide a detailed picture of the tooth from crown to root
- Panoramic X-rays show your entire mouth at the same time and are a great way to check on the development of teeth and spot any potential crowding issues
Are X-Rays Safe?
Yes! Digital dental X-rays are incredibly safe and expose you to only a very low dose of radiation. In fact, a routine set of dental X-rays exposes you to about the same amount of radiation as a two-hour airplane flight. Moreover, you’ll wear a leaded vest for protection.
